National Women In Roofing
The technology and construction industries are the fastest growing industries economically; as a career salesperson of 10+ years, I was drawn to the excitement.
New to roofing, I looked for organizations to network in and immediately noticed the lack of women in the industry. In fact, for 2018 it was reported only 0.5% of the roofing professionals in the country are women. This number is improving, and we are seeing women at the top of roofing companies as CEOs and marketing directors, and in other leading roles. Women are also pursuing roofing research, sales, distributing, consulting, manufacturing and some are on rooftops.
I learned of National Women In Roofing (NWIR) while attending a local roofing trade show.
NWIR is a new organization, officially launched at the IRE in 2016, that is dedicated to advancing and empowering women in roofing. There are 1,200 members (both men and women), and local state councils are being established all over the country. The goal of NWIR is to provide networking, mentoring, education and recruitment opportunities to help new female professionals entering the industry, as well as seasoned pros. With the number of women in roofing increasing, men are joining the organization as well for the benefits of recruiting, training, networking, and to ensure they are providing workplace equality.
Colorado’s council is led by Tamira Trujillo (Endeavor Exteriors) and Tami Moore (Kudu Roofing) and we meet every month, all around the Denver-Metro area. Each meeting covers a learning topic, such as:
- understanding the insurance claim process and how waiving your client’s deductible is insurance fraud.
- Denver’s new Green Roof ordinance and how to meet the standards economically.
In addition to education, mentoring and training benefits, NWIR also offers scholarship and award opportunities. The WORLD Award is accepting nominations now and will be awarded at the 2020 NWIR Day to honor an outstanding woman in the roofing industry.
To anyone new to roofing, NWIR is a great organization to be apart of and get your feet wet. To the seasoned pro, the NWIR is great for you as well to expand your network, learn what you don’t know, recognition for your accomplishments, and to help pioneer a path for our next generation of roofing professionals.
The next NWIR meeting is August 29th and the learning topic is Denver’s Green Roof Mandate. Contact Nathaine Mattos (GAF) or Rocky Mountain Reps for more information. Click HERE for membership information.
